Harley Sommer

Harley Sommer, Adviser

Mrs. Sommer is an English teacher at Warrenton High School, where she teaches LA3, Yearbook, and Journalism I and II. While this is her first year teaching at WHS, this is not her first time in the building. Mrs. Sommer graduated from Warrenton in 2019. She co-sponsors Student Council and is the Assistant Coach of the Speech and Debate team. In high school, she was a part of many extracurriculars, like Thespians, Speech and Debate, National Honor Society, Link Crew, and Student Council. One of her favorite parts about coming back home is getting to give back to the community that raised her. Her favorite memory from high school is leading the fish heist, resulting in the aquarium on Mrs. Hancock’s ceiling (if you know, you know).

Mrs. Sommer graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with her degree in Secondary English Education and a minor in History in December of 2022. Living in Cape Girardeau was one of the best experiences of her life. She would encourage anyone who wants to be a teacher to attend SEMO. The professors are top notch and the campus is beautiful (especially if you like climbing hills). She is also currently pursuing her M.A. in Secondary English Education at SEMO with plans to graduate in December 2024. After this, she hopes to earn some more experience teaching before she starts the process of getting a PhD. While she is only 23 now, it’s on her bucket list to become Dr. Sommer before she turns 30. She may even go back to school for another B.A. in the meantime.

Just recently married in October of 2022, Mrs. Sommer enjoys spending time with her husband and their adopted pitbull, Jesse. They also have a 10-year-old boxer named Gracie, more affectionately known as Goose. When she is not in her classroom (which is rare), she enjoys reading, writing, cooking, or watching TikTok. She enjoys learning about history and is often found in the Scooter’s drive-thru. Overall, Mrs. Sommer loves to laugh and have fun. Life isn’t meant to be taken seriously.

One of her favorite quotes is also the piece of advice that she would give anyone: “If you find yourself more fortunate than others, build a longer table, not a taller wall.” Work hard, stay humble, and be kind.
