Suffolk County, New York — A heated high school basketball game on Long Island spiraled into chaos after a spectator allegedly ran onto the court and punched a 15-year-old player, prompting criminal charges and disciplinary action from school officials and athletic administrators.
The incident unfolded in the final minute of a matchup between Half Hollow Hills West High School and Comsewogue High School, when tensions between players erupted into a physical confrontation that quickly drew in adults from the stands.
Fight breaks out in closing seconds
According to reports, the altercation occurred with just 44 seconds remaining in the game, with Half Hollow Hills West leading 63–52. Video footage shows multiple players shoving one another near midcourt as a referee attempted to intervene. Within moments, additional players ran toward the scuffle, escalating the situation.
As coaches, security staff, and spectators moved closer to the court, a man later identified as Jeffery Vernot, 36, allegedly left the stands and rushed toward the players involved.
Teen player allegedly struck by adult spectator
Authorities say Vernot struck a 15-year-old Comsewogue player, causing visible distress. In the video aired by local media, the teen appears to stumble and struggle after the encounter, while adults attempt to regain control of the scene.
Police later charged Vernot with third-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 30.
The remainder of the game was never played. After several minutes of confusion and efforts to restore order, both teams were escorted off the court, and the gym was cleared.
Schools respond to on-court violence
In the aftermath, both school districts released statements condemning the violence and emphasizing student safety.
Comsewogue School District officials said they were “deeply disappointed” by the incident, while the Half Hollow Hills Central School District stated that it condemns all forms of violence and is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
“We remain committed to implementing appropriate measures to help prevent similar incidents in the future,” said Superintendent John O’Farrell.
Athletic sanctions also issued
Beyond the criminal case, the incident triggered disciplinary action from Section XI, the governing body for high school athletics in Suffolk County. Officials announced that individuals who violated policies by fighting or leaving the bench area would receive two-game suspensions, in line with league rules.
While those sanctions apply to players involved in the scuffle, school officials emphasized that spectators are strictly prohibited from entering the court or engaging with student-athletes under any circumstances.
Safety concerns at school sporting events
The incident has renewed concerns among parents and educators about fan behavior at youth sporting events, particularly as emotions run high during close or contentious games.
High school sports administrators stress that games are meant to be competitive but respectful environments, with adults expected to model appropriate behavior.
Any physical contact by an adult toward a student-athlete can carry serious legal consequences, officials noted.
