Lehigh Acres, Florida — A neighborhood argument in Southwest Florida escalated into a deadly house fire over the weekend, leaving a family dog dead and a local woman facing serious felony charges, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called to a home in Lehigh Acres after reports of a residential fire. Authorities said the occupants were able to escape safely before first responders arrived, but the incident quickly turned into a criminal investigation once evidence of intentional arson emerged.
Argument Leads to Fire Investigation
According to investigators, deputies learned that a verbal altercation had taken place earlier in the day between one of the homeowners and Jasmine Renee Saintil. While the exact cause of the dispute remains unclear, officials said the argument preceded the fire by several hours.
Witness accounts and surveillance evidence indicated that Saintil later returned to the home.
Deputies said she was seen standing on the front porch for an extended period before suddenly fleeing the area as smoke began pouring from the residence.
Suspect Allegedly Seen With Torch and Bottle
Investigators allege that Saintil was observed running from the scene carrying a torch and a bottle, suggesting an accelerant may have been used to ignite the fire. The flames and smoke spread quickly through the home.
Although the residents escaped unharmed, the family’s dog remained inside the house and died from smoke inhalation, authorities confirmed.
The loss of the pet elevated the case beyond arson alone, triggering additional criminal charges.
Arrest and Charges Filed
Saintil was located shortly after the fire and taken into custody without incident, according to deputies.
She now faces two serious felony charges, including:
- First-degree arson
- Aggravated animal cruelty
Authorities emphasized that the charges reflect not only the damage to property, but also the loss of life caused by the fire.
Sheriff Condemns Act, Vows Accountability
Carmine Marceno, who heads the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, issued a strong statement condemning the alleged actions.
“Anyone who intentionally sets a fire shows a complete disregard for life,” Marceno said. “That disregard extends to innocent animals, which I have zero tolerance for. I will always hold my commitment to protect both our residents of Lee County and their pets.”
Officials said the investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue reviewing evidence and witness statements.
