Irvine, California — Police in Irvine are asking for the public’s help after a man allegedly stole approximately $1,700 worth of high-end caviar from a local grocery store in what authorities describe as a calculated and deliberate theft.
According to investigators, the incident took place at a Whole Foods Market location in Irvine in December 2025, but surveillance footage and details were released publicly this week as officers continue efforts to identify the suspect.
Suspect Blended in With Shoppers
Authorities say the man entered the store appearing to behave like any other customer. Surveillance video shows him dressed entirely in black, calmly walking through store aisles and browsing items alongside unsuspecting shoppers.
To avoid drawing attention, the suspect reportedly picked up a store hand basket and placed various items inside, mimicking normal shopping behavior.
“The individual appeared to intentionally blend in with other customers to avoid suspicion,” police said while describing the footage.
Investigators believe this tactic allowed the man to remain unnoticed as he prepared to carry out the theft.
Caviar Targeted in Calculated Move
At some point during his time inside the store, the suspect focused on the seafood section, where he allegedly selected multiple containers of premium caviar, a high-value item often kept under close watch due to its cost.
Police say the man placed the caviar into a paper Whole Foods bag that he had brought with him into the store, suggesting the theft may have been planned in advance.
The total value of the stolen items is estimated at around $1,700, making it one of the more expensive retail thefts reported in the area in recent months.
Quick Exit Without Paying
After transferring the caviar into the paper bag, the suspect allegedly ditched the hand basket and made his way toward the exit.
“The suspect exited the store quickly without making any attempt to pay,” authorities said.
Store employees were not immediately aware of the theft, and the man was able to leave the premises before staff or security could intervene.
Surveillance Video Released to Public
On January 8, officers with the Irvine Police Department released surveillance images and video clips in hopes that someone might recognize the suspect.
The footage shows the man casually moving through the store, reinforcing investigators’ belief that he was familiar with how to avoid detection.
Police have not disclosed whether the suspect acted alone or if similar thefts have occurred at other grocery locations.
Retail Theft Remains a Concern
While retail theft often involves smaller items, police say this case highlights a growing trend of thieves targeting high-value specialty products that can be resold quickly.
Caviar, in particular, is considered a prime target due to its compact size, high price, and demand in resale markets.
“Crimes involving luxury food items are becoming more common, especially when thieves believe they can leave unnoticed,” a law enforcement source noted.
