Near-Record Cold Set to Grip Maryland, Weekend Snow Uncertainty Remains

Baltimore, Maryland — Another stretch of intense winter weather is lining up for Maryland, with near-record cold expected this weekend and the possibility of significant snowfall depending on how a developing storm system tracks later this week. After a brief and welcome warm-up, forecasters warn that the cold will return with force, bringing potentially disruptive conditions across the state.

Frigid Start to Wednesday Across Baltimore Region

Wednesday morning will once again test residents’ tolerance for cold. Temperatures are expected to dip below 10 degrees in areas outside the Baltimore Beltway before sunrise, while much of the metro area will hover in the low to mid-teens.

Winds will be lighter than earlier in the week, but the cold will still be biting, especially during the early morning commute.

“This is still dangerous cold, even without strong winds,” forecasters cautioned, urging residents to limit time outdoors during the morning hours.

A Code Blue Alert remains in effect for Baltimore City through Wednesday morning, signaling an elevated risk for people without adequate heat or shelter. City officials are urging residents to check on elderly neighbors, the sick, and unhoused individuals to ensure they are safe.

Midweek Warm-Up Offers a Brief Break

After the frigid morning, conditions will slowly improve Wednesday afternoon. High temperatures are expected to climb toward 40 degrees, with a mix of sunshine and clouds and a lingering chill in the breeze.

Snow showers may develop in the higher elevations of Garrett and Allegany counties, while the Baltimore metro could see a few sprinkles later in the evening, though most locations will stay dry.

Thursday will feel noticeably milder. Many communities are expected to reach the mid to upper 40s, and a few southern and central Maryland locations could briefly touch 50 degrees. Skies will be cloudier, and a spotty light rain is possible, but widespread rainfall is not expected.

“Thursday will be the calm before the storm,” meteorologists said, encouraging residents to take advantage of the milder weather to prepare for what’s coming next.

Arctic Air Returns With a Vengeance This Weekend

Any sense of comfort will be short-lived. Forecast models continue to signal a sharp return to extreme cold beginning late Friday and intensifying through the weekend.

Daytime highs on Saturday and Sunday are expected to struggle to escape the upper teens and lower 20s, with wind chills dropping below zero at times. Overnight lows could fall into the single digits, especially in rural and higher-elevation areas.

Even without snow, the cold alone poses risks, including frozen pipes, dangerous travel conditions, and increased strain on heating systems.

Heavy Snow Still on the Table for Maryland

Alongside the Arctic air, forecasters are closely monitoring a developing storm system that could bring heavy snow to parts of Maryland late Saturday into Sunday.

The exact impact will depend heavily on the storm’s track.

“If the system shifts farther north, Maryland could see a significant snowfall,” forecasters noted. “If it stays farther south, the heaviest impacts may remain confined to the Deep South and Southeast.”

At this stage, forecast uncertainty remains high, which is typical several days out. However, confidence is growing that at least some portion of the state could see impactful winter weather, whether from snow, bitter cold, or both.

What to Expect and How to Prepare

Regardless of whether heavy snow materializes, this weekend’s weather is shaping up to be disruptive and potentially dangerous. Travel could become hazardous, especially if snow develops on top of already frigid conditions that prevent melting.

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Protect pipes, pets, and plants
  • Limit unnecessary travel
  • Have emergency supplies ready, including food, water, and extra blankets
  • Monitor updated forecasts closely as details become clearer late Wednesday into Thursday

“This is not a weekend to take lightly,” meteorologists warned. “Preparation now can prevent serious problems later.”

Looking Ahead

Forecast confidence will improve over the next 24 to 48 hours as newer data becomes available. While there is still room for change, the message is clear: Maryland is heading into one of the coldest stretches of the season, with snow still very much in play.

Stay weather-aware, plan ahead, and be ready for rapidly changing conditions as the weekend approaches.
