Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — A busy evening near Temple University turned tragic after a 16-year-old boy was found fatally shot inside the bathroom of a Chipotle restaurant, prompting an ongoing search for three teenage suspects.
Philadelphia police say the shooting happened Monday, January 12, during the dinner rush at the restaurant located along Montgomery Avenue, a popular area for students and local residents. Officers were called to the scene shortly after 5:15 p.m. following reports of a person with a gun inside the business.
Victim Identified as 16-Year-Old Student
Police identified the victim as Khyon Smith-Tate, 16. When officers arrived, they found the teen suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest inside the restaurant’s bathroom.
Khyon was pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency response efforts.
Investigators said the teenager had been inside the bathroom with at least one of the suspects at the time of the shooting.
Shooting Happened During Dinner Rush
According to Scott Small, the shooting occurred while the restaurant was filled with customers.
“Not only did we find one victim in the bathroom, but we also found one spent shell casing,” Small said during a media briefing near the restaurant. “So we know at least one shot was fired from a semi-automatic weapon.”
Police said the presence of customers and employees inside the restaurant at the time has made the incident especially alarming.
No Motive Yet Identified
As of Thursday morning, investigators had not determined a motive for the shooting. Authorities confirmed that no arrests have been made, and the case remains under active investigation.
Police believe the suspects fled the area shortly after the shooting.
Suspects Believed to Be Teenagers
Authorities are searching for three suspects, all believed to be between 16 and 17 years old. Police released detailed descriptions in hopes of generating leads.
Suspect descriptions provided by police include:
- One suspect with dreadlocks wearing a black coat, pink hooded sweatshirt, black sweatpants, and black sneakers, carrying a red backpack
- A second suspect wearing a black coat, black jeans, and black sneakers, carrying a black backpack
- A third suspect with dreadlocks wearing a black coat, blue hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and black sneakers, carrying a dark-colored backpack
Investigators are asking anyone who recognizes these descriptions or was in the area at the time to come forward.
Community Shaken Near Campus Area
The shooting has rattled the neighborhood surrounding Temple University, where students and families frequently gather at nearby businesses.
Residents expressed concern over the violence occurring in a public space during peak hours, raising renewed questions about youth violence and safety around commercial corridors.
Chipotle Responds to Incident
A representative for Chipotle Mexican Grill confirmed the company is cooperating fully with police.
The restaurant has been temporarily closed, and the company said counseling services are being offered to employees affected by the incident.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic incident that occurred at our restaurant,” the company said in a statement. “The safety of our employees and guests is our top priority, and we hope those responsible are apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Investigation Continues
Philadelphia police say they are reviewing surveillance footage from inside and around the restaurant, as well as canvassing the area for witnesses.
Authorities have not said whether the victim and suspects knew each other prior to the incident.
As the investigation continues, police urge anyone with information — no matter how small — to assist in bringing answers to Khyon Smith-Tate’s family.
