North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — A teenage boy was found shot to death inside the bathroom of a busy Chipotle restaurant near Temple University on Monday evening, a violent incident that unfolded just as students and staff were returning to campus for the first day of the spring 2026 semester.
Police say the killing occurred in a heavily trafficked area on the edge of campus, rattling students and employees and prompting an active investigation.
Teen found fatally shot inside restaurant bathroom
According to the Philadelphia Police Department, officers were called to the Chipotle on the 1100 block of West Montgomery Avenue around 5 p.m. Monday. The restaurant sits on the ground floor of The View at Montgomery apartments, near Temple’s Student Center and TECH Center.
Chief Inspector Scott Small said a 16-year-old boy was found inside the bathroom suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at 5:24 p.m.
“The loss of life to gun violence is a profound tragedy, and there are no words that can make sense of it,” Temple University President John Fry and Vice President for Public Safety and Chief of Police Jennifer Griffin said in a joint statement. “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones.”
Police say shooting happened moments after restroom entry
Investigators believe the shooting took place inside the bathroom itself. According to police, the teen and another minor asked employees for the restroom key shortly before the incident.
Moments later, staff discovered the teen had been shot. A spent shell casing from a semiautomatic weapon was found inside the bathroom, police said.
While the victim has not been publicly identified, authorities noted that his last known address was about eight blocks from the restaurant.
Crowded store, but few witnesses heard gunfire
Police said the Chipotle was extremely crowded at the time of the shooting, with customers, students, and staff inside the restaurant. Several people were detained briefly for questioning as detectives worked to piece together what happened.
Despite the number of people present, investigators said they have not yet identified anyone who heard a gunshot inside the store.
“We believe there were multiple individuals involved, and we’re working to determine exactly what happened inside that bathroom,” Small said.
Person of interest detained as investigation continues
A person of interest was taken into custody a few blocks from the scene, though police emphasized that their involvement has not been confirmed. Investigators are also searching for the second minor who entered the bathroom with the victim.
Police said a third individual, described as wearing dark clothing and carrying a backpack, may also be connected to the incident.
Authorities noted that the area is covered by numerous surveillance cameras, which are now being reviewed as part of the investigation.
Community reacts as semester begins
The shooting occurred in an area students describe as a frequent gathering spot for teens after school hours. The timing — on the first day of the new semester — has heightened concern among the campus community.
“Like a big crowd or something on the streets, it’s usually in the afternoon after school,” said Temple sophomore Mauricio Gonzalez. “Someone needs to watch out for these children. Where are their parents?”

A Chipotle employee, Jesús Lucero, said coworkers informed him of the shooting after it happened.
“No one actually knows how it happened,” Lucero said. “But the crew members are OK.”
Support services offered to students
Temple University said students impacted by the incident are encouraged to seek help through Tuttleman Counseling Services, as the investigation continues.
Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Philadelphia Police Department.
