Man Shot to Death Outside Ocala Home as Police Arrest Suspect

Ocala, Florida — A quiet Ocala neighborhood was shaken Wednesday afternoon after a man was shot and killed in the front yard of his home in what police are calling a random and horrific act of violence. Authorities say the suspect was quickly located and arrested, and investigators believe the attack was not targeted.

The Ocala Police Department said officers were first alerted to a suspicious individual shortly after 3:30 p.m., just moments before the fatal shooting occurred.

Suspicious encounter reported moments before shooting

According to police, a caller dialed 911 to report a man dressed entirely in black walking toward his home in a suspicious manner. The caller told dispatchers the man motioned for him to stop as he drove past.

The caller continued driving but reported seeing the suspect rack the slide of what appeared to be a pistol, raising immediate concern.

Officers were dispatched to the area based on that call.

Second 911 call reports fatal shooting nearby

Just minutes later, police received a second 911 call reporting that someone had been shot roughly one block east of the initial location.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found 64-year-old Harold Whitt Harper lying in the front yard of his home. He was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound.

Suspect located with firearm

As officers canvassed the area, a responding officer spotted a man matching the suspect description approximately two blocks south of the shooting scene.

Police identified the suspect as 29-year-old Isaac Ezekiel Toye.

“The individual matched the description provided in the initial call,” police said.

Investigators confirmed that Toye was armed with a pistol at the time he was detained.

Evidence links suspect to both incidents

According to police, witness statements and physical evidence place Toye at the scene of both the suspicious encounter and the fatal shooting.

Authorities said there is no known relationship between Toye and the victim, strengthening the belief that the violence was random.

Charges filed

Toye was taken into custody and later charged with:

  • Two counts of aggravated assault
  • One count of homicide

Police did not immediately release information about a possible motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Police say no ongoing threat

In a statement shared on social media, the Ocala Police Department emphasized that there is no continued danger to the public.

“There is no indication that this was a targeted attack or that there are additional suspects,” police said.
“We are confident there is no further danger to the community.”

Authorities also thanked residents who came forward with information, saying their cooperation helped investigators solve the case quickly.

Community left shaken

Neighbors described the incident as deeply unsettling, especially given the randomness of the attack and the fact that it occurred in broad daylight.

Police say incidents like this highlight the importance of reporting suspicious behavior immediately, noting that the initial 911 call played a key role in the rapid response.

Investigation continues

Detectives continue to review evidence and witness accounts as the case moves forward. Further court proceedings are expected in the coming days.

Police extended their condolences to the victim’s family, saying the department’s thoughts remain with them during an incredibly difficult time.
