Doral Man Arrested After Speaker Theft Tip Leads to Marijuana Seizure

Doral, Florida — What began as an investigation into a high-value cargo theft ended with a major drug bust Saturday after detectives uncovered more than 200 bags of marijuana at a warehouse in Doral, according to arrest records.

Authorities say the case stemmed from a tip involving stolen JBL speakers valued at roughly $500,000, leading investigators to a warehouse where a suspect was allegedly attempting to move boxes linked to the theft. Instead, detectives discovered hundreds of pounds of cannabis and a large amount of cash.

Cargo Theft Tip Sparked Investigation

According to law enforcement records, detectives were following up on information related to a suspected cargo theft involving a shipping container filled with JBL speakers.

Investigators learned that a GPS tracking device hidden inside one of the speaker boxes was still active. Data from the tracker led detectives to a warehouse located in Doral, prompting further surveillance.

Officials say the tip ultimately proved to be critical in uncovering a much larger criminal operation.

Surveillance Leads Detectives to Warehouse

Using surveillance cameras near the warehouse, detectives observed a large pallet containing four boxes positioned outside the facility’s fence line.

According to the arrest report, officers then saw Kadniel Blackwood, 30, parked next to the pallet in a vehicle. He was allegedly seen exiting the car and attempting to load the boxes into his vehicle.

“Detectives observed the suspect actively trying to move the boxes from the pallet,” the report stated.

At that point, investigators moved in to make contact.

Suspect Tried to Run, Police Say

When detectives — who were in plain clothes — approached Blackwood, authorities say he ran from the scene on foot.

According to the report, the suspect attempted to flee but fell between a parked vehicle and a fence, allowing officers to quickly take him into custody. No injuries were reported during the arrest.

Blackwood was later charged with trafficking cannabis and resisting arrest without violence, according to Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office jail records.

Marijuana Smell Leads to Major Discovery

As detectives questioned Blackwood at the scene, they noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the boxes, authorities said.

When officers opened the containers, they discovered approximately 201 vacuum-sealed bags of cannabis. The total weight of the marijuana was estimated at about 233 pounds, according to the arrest report.

“The contents were consistent with packaged cannabis intended for trafficking,” investigators noted.

The scale of the seizure immediately elevated the case from a cargo theft investigation to a major narcotics arrest.

Cash and Additional Evidence Found

In addition to the marijuana, detectives searched Blackwood’s vehicle and found a shopping bag containing large sums of cash, authorities said.

The money was reportedly wrapped in rubber bands, a method commonly associated with drug trafficking cases. A wallet was also recovered from inside the vehicle.

According to police, the total amount of cash seized was $36,158.

Suspect Remained Silent After Arrest

Following his arrest, Blackwood was transported to Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office headquarters, where investigators attempted to question him further.

Authorities say Blackwood invoked his right to remain silent and did not provide a statement regarding the marijuana, cash, or the suspected stolen cargo.

Detectives have not confirmed whether the marijuana was connected to the stolen speaker shipment or whether additional suspects may be involved.

Investigation Remains Ongoing

Police have not released details about where the marijuana originated or where it was allegedly headed. Investigators are also continuing to review evidence related to the stolen JBL speakers, including whether more merchandise from the cargo theft remains unaccounted for.

Officials have not announced whether federal agencies could become involved due to the size of the seizure and the potential interstate nature of the operation.

A Case That Took an Unexpected Turn

Authorities say the arrest highlights how routine theft investigations can sometimes uncover far more serious crimes.

“This investigation started with stolen property and ended with a significant drug seizure,” a law enforcement source said.

As the case moves forward, prosecutors will determine whether additional charges are filed.
