Los Angeles, California — A dangerous high-speed pursuit through busy city streets and a major freeway ended in a violent crash Monday night, leaving a possible DUI suspect in custody after officers surrounded his wrecked vehicle in the San Fernando Valley.
Authorities said the pursuit involved an older male driver believed to be possibly armed, raising the level of concern as the chase unfolded across multiple neighborhoods. The incident began in the Reseda area around 9:20 p.m., though officials have not yet clarified what initially prompted officers to attempt a traffic stop.
Suspect drove at extreme speeds with headlights off
According to police, the suspect led officers on a chaotic chase through surface streets, weaving in and out of traffic at speeds reaching 95 miles per hour, at times driving with his headlights completely turned off.
The suspect narrowly avoided a spike strip before entering the northbound 101 Freeway, where speeds reportedly climbed above 100 miles per hour, creating a serious risk to other drivers on the road.
Officers said the suspect’s erratic driving behavior appeared deliberate and reckless, as he repeatedly changed lanes and attempted to evade law enforcement.
CHP briefly takes over pursuit
Around 9:40 p.m., officers with the California Highway Patrol assumed the lead in the pursuit after the suspect transitioned onto the freeway.
However, the situation quickly shifted again when the suspect exited the freeway at Winnetka Avenue and returned to surface streets. At that point, CHP pulled back and handed control back to the Los Angeles Police Department, citing safety concerns in residential areas.
Reckless maneuvers endanger public
Once back on city streets, officers said the suspect became even more unpredictable.
Police reported that the driver:
- Drove repeatedly on the wrong side of the road
- Ran multiple red lights
- Slowed at intersections before making sudden U-turns
- Faked right turns to mislead officers
The suspect repeatedly attempted to confuse pursuing officers by pretending to turn and then abruptly changing direction, authorities said.
These tactics prolonged the pursuit for nearly 40 minutes, heightening fears that the chase could end in serious injuries.
Crash at busy intersection ends pursuit
The chase finally came to an end near the intersection of Corbin Avenue and Saticoy Street, where officers said the suspect approached at a high rate of speed.
As he appeared to swerve to avoid another motorist, the driver lost control of the vehicle, spun out, struck a light pole, and came to rest beneath a tree.
The impact caused significant damage to the vehicle, trapping the suspect inside.
Officers immediately surrounded the car with weapons drawn, ordering the driver to comply.
Suspect taken into custody without injuries
Police said the suspect was unable to exit the vehicle on his own due to crash damage. Officers worked quickly to free him before placing him under arrest.
Despite the severity of the crash and the dangerous driving behavior, no officers or civilians were injured, authorities confirmed.
Aerial footage captured the dramatic conclusion of the pursuit, showing officers swarming the wrecked car beneath the tree.
Investigation ongoing
As of late Monday night, police had not released the suspect’s name or confirmed whether he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the chase. Investigators are also working to determine whether the man was armed, as initially suspected.
Officials said potential charges could include felony evading, reckless driving, DUI, and weapons-related offenses, pending further investigation.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by high-speed pursuits, particularly in densely populated urban areas.
