North Versailles, Pennsylvania — A routine emergency response turned into a violent collision Tuesday afternoon after a police cruiser with lights and sirens activated was involved in a two-vehicle crash along one of North Versailles’ busiest roadways, sending three people to the hospital, including a police officer and a child.
Authorities say the crash occurred just before 4 p.m. on Lincoln Highway, prompting an immediate response from county investigators as traffic slowed in the area and emergency crews worked to treat the injured.
Police cruiser involved while responding to medical emergency
According to the Allegheny County Police, the crash involved two vehicles — one of them a cruiser from the North Versailles Police Department.
Investigators said the officer was actively responding to a medical emergency at the time of the incident, with emergency lights and sirens activated, when another vehicle pulled out in front of the cruiser.
“The officer was responding to a medical emergency when another vehicle entered the roadway,” police said in a statement.
The impact was described as severe, prompting county officials to deploy their Homicide and Collision Reconstruction Unit to assist with the investigation.
Driver and child passenger taken to hospital
Police confirmed that the second vehicle involved in the crash was carrying a driver and a child passenger. Both were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Officials said the driver and child were listed in stable condition, though the extent of their injuries has not been publicly detailed.
“Both occupants of the civilian vehicle were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover,” authorities said.
The presence of a child among the injured added urgency to the response, with multiple emergency vehicles seen at the scene shortly after the collision.
Officer also hospitalized, listed in stable condition
The officer driving the police cruiser was also injured in the crash and was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Police confirmed the officer is currently in stable condition.
While the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, officials noted that the officer was evaluated due to the force of the impact.
The officer’s name has not been released, in keeping with department policy during an active investigation.
Collision reconstruction unit leading investigation
Due to the seriousness of the crash and the involvement of a police vehicle, the Allegheny County Police Homicide and Collision Reconstruction Unit was called in to investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.
This specialized unit is typically deployed in cases involving severe crashes, fatalities, or police-involved incidents to ensure a thorough and independent review.
“Detectives are investigating all aspects of the crash, including vehicle movements, speed, and roadway conditions,” police said.
Investigators are expected to review dash camera footage, vehicle data, and witness statements as part of the probe.
