Indianapolis, Indiana — Authorities in Indianapolis have arrested a 37-year-old woman following a deeply concerning late-night incident that led to attempted murder and child abuse charges, according to police reports and court records.
The case unfolded after emergency responders were called to a residential home on Baltimore Avenue, where officers say a 1-year-old child was placed in serious danger. While the child was later determined to be physically unharmed, investigators say the circumstances warranted immediate arrest and felony charges.
Police respond to emergency call on Baltimore Avenue
Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to a home in the 3500 block of Baltimore Avenue at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Sunday night following a 911 call reporting a possible incident involving a minor.
When officers arrived, they made contact with the accused woman, an adult female witness, and the 1-year-old child. According to police, the witness immediately expressed concern for the child’s safety and described behavior that she believed placed the child at risk.
“The witness indicated she intervened after observing actions she believed could seriously harm the child,” police noted in their report.
Witness reports unusual behavior before incident
Investigators learned that earlier in the evening, the witness and the accused had been watching a religious-themed movie together. After the movie ended, the accused reportedly began behaving erratically, asking confusing and unsettling questions related to the film.
A short time later, the witness checked on the child and discovered a situation that prompted her to act immediately to protect the toddler.
“She stated the child was in visible distress when she entered the room,” officers wrote.

Police say the witness physically intervened to stop the situation and then contacted emergency services.
Child evaluated by medical personnel

During the initial investigation, police say the accused made concerning and incoherent statements, suggesting she believed her actions were somehow required or expected.
“The statements raised immediate red flags for investigators,” an officer familiar with the case said.
According to police, the accused also referenced the idea of harming the child in a ritualistic or symbolic manner, prompting detectives to expand the scope of their investigation.

Authorities reported that the accused may be suffering from significant mental health challenges, including possible schizophrenia. These claims were shared with investigators by the witness and are now part of the ongoing case review.

“Mental health considerations do not change the seriousness of the alleged actions,” officials said.
Charges filed and jail status
Following a post-Miranda interview, investigators say the accused admitted she attempted to harm the child, though she was reportedly unable to clearly explain her motives.
She was taken into custody and booked into the Marion County Jail, where she remained held without bond as of midweek.
The woman now faces one count of attempted murder and one count of child molestation involving a minor under 14, according to court records.
