Duncannon, Pennsylvania — An 11-year-old boy in central Pennsylvania has been charged with homicide following a fatal shooting that left a 42-year-old man dead early Tuesday morning. Investigators say the incident occurred inside a residence in Perry County, though many details remain undisclosed due to the suspect’s age.
The case has drawn significant attention as law enforcement works to determine what led to the deadly shooting involving a juvenile.
Shooting Reported Before Dawn
According to the Pennsylvania State Police, troopers responded to a home on South Market Street in Duncannon Borough around 3 a.m. Tuesday, where they found a man deceased inside the residence.
The victim was later identified as Douglas Dietz, 42.
Authorities have not released information about what led up to the shooting or what type of firearm was involved.
Juvenile Taken Into Custody Without Incident
Investigators confirmed that a “juvenile household member” was involved in the shooting. The suspect, an 11-year-old boy, was taken into custody without incident, according to officials.
“Due to the age of the suspect, no identifying information will be released,” state police said.
The relationship between the child and the victim has not been disclosed, and investigators have not confirmed whether other individuals were inside the home at the time of the incident.
Homicide Charge Filed in Juvenile Court
Court records show the boy is facing one count of criminal homicide. He was arraigned Tuesday before Richard Gibney.
During the hearing:
- Bail was denied
- The child was remanded to Perry County Prison
- A preliminary hearing was scheduled for later this month
Because the suspect is a minor, the case will proceed under Pennsylvania’s juvenile justice system, unless prosecutors later seek to move the case to adult court — a decision that has not been announced.
Limited Details as Investigation Continues
Authorities have released few details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Investigators have not said whether the firearm belonged to the victim, the child, or another household member, nor have they addressed whether the shooting was accidental or intentional.

“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” police said, urging patience as detectives continue gathering evidence.
Public Asked to Come Forward With Information
State police are asking anyone with information related to the shooting to contact investigators, emphasizing that even small details could be important.
Officials say updates will be provided as the investigation progresses, though information may remain limited due to the suspect’s age.
The case has raised difficult questions about juvenile access to firearms, household safety, and accountability under the law.
