Tucson, Arizona — A sharp dose of winter cold is settling into southern Arizona tonight as clear skies and calm winds allow temperatures to fall rapidly after sunset. Forecasters warn that freezing conditions are likely across the Tucson metro area by early Saturday morning, creating risks for plants, pets, and exposed plumbing.
According to the National Weather Service, a Freeze Warning remains in effect from midnight through 9 a.m. Saturday for Tucson, the Santa Cruz River Valley, and portions of Pinal County.
Temperatures plunge overnight
Overnight lows are expected to fall into the upper 20s to near 30 degrees, with colder pockets dropping as low as 25 degrees by daybreak. These readings mark one of the coldest mornings so far this season for the region.
As winds go calm and skies stay clear, radiational cooling will allow heat to escape quickly, increasing the likelihood of frost development.
“Frost will become more widespread toward sunrise, especially in low-lying and sheltered areas,” forecasters said.
Frost poses risk to plants and pipes
The freezing temperatures pose a real threat to sensitive vegetation, including citrus, desert ornamentals, and newly planted landscaping.
Key concerns include:
- Damage to tender plants
- Frozen outdoor pipes and irrigation lines
- Cold stress for pets left outdoors overnight
Residents are urged to cover plants, bring pets indoors, and insulate exposed plumbing before heading to bed.
Travel impacts minor but caution advised
While widespread travel problems are not expected, early-morning drivers may encounter:
- Frost-covered windshields
- Slick spots on bridges and overpasses
- Cold pavement in shaded areas
Allowing extra time for windshield clearing and driving cautiously on elevated surfaces is advised.
Localized fog could briefly develop in low-lying areas, which may enhance frost formation by trapping moisture near the ground.

Sunshine brings quick afternoon recovery
Relief arrives quickly after sunrise.
By Saturday afternoon, abundant sunshine and a light breeze will help temperatures rebound into the upper 50s, easing the chill felt earlier in the day.
Winds will increase slightly during the afternoon, helping mix warmer air back into the valley.
Warming trend continues into next week
The cold snap is expected to be short-lived, with a steady warming trend developing through the rest of the weekend and into early next week.
- Sunday: Sunny and breezy, highs near 62
- Monday: Mostly sunny and warmer, highs near 68
- Tuesday: Continued sunshine, highs near 70, with overnight lows in the low 40s
Meteorologists say no additional freeze warnings are expected after Saturday morning as overnight temperatures gradually rise.
What residents should do tonight
Before nightfall, residents are encouraged to:
- Cover or move sensitive plants
- Bring pets indoors
- Insulate exposed pipes
- Prepare for a cold start Saturday morning
While winter’s grip will loosen quickly during the day, the early-morning freeze could still cause damage if precautions aren’t taken.
