Salt Lake City, Utah — A shooting outside a church in Salt Lake City Wednesday night left at least two people dead and several others wounded, as authorities search for the suspect or suspects responsible and work to determine what led up to the violence.
The incident unfolded outside a church building while a funeral service was taking place inside, heightening shock and concern within the community.
Shooting erupts outside church during memorial service
According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire near a church building Wednesday evening.
Police confirmed that two people were killed in the shooting. In addition, at least six others were injured, with three victims listed in critical condition.
Emergency responders rushed multiple victims to area hospitals as officers secured the scene and began searching for those responsible.
“This is an active and ongoing investigation,” police said, noting that the situation developed rapidly.
Church confirms incident occurred during funeral
In a statement released late Wednesday, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints confirmed that the shooting happened outside a church meetinghouse while a memorial service was underway inside the chapel.
The incident occurred at a church located at 660 North Redwood Road, church officials said.
“We are aware of a serious incident that occurred outside a Church meetinghouse tonight as a memorial service was being held in the chapel,” the Church said. “The Church is cooperating with law enforcement and is grateful for the efforts of first responders.”
Officials emphasized that the violence occurred outside the building, and no details were released about whether those inside were evacuated or sheltered during the response.
Suspect remains at large
Police said the suspect or suspects involved have not been apprehended and remain at large.
