Jasper, Alabama — A heartbreaking search for a missing Florida child ended in tragedy after a 4-year-old boy was found dead in rural Alabama woods, following an intensive, multi-day effort involving hundreds of responders.
Authorities confirmed that Johnathan Everett Boley, affectionately known as “John John” by his family, was located on January 2, roughly two miles from the property where he was last seen, according to the Walker County Sheriff’s Office.
The boy had been reported missing on New Year’s Eve after wandering away from a rural home along Highway 195 near Jasper, where he was visiting family for the holidays.
Massive search launched across wooded terrain
Sheriff Nick Smith said Johnathan disappeared while playing outside with the family dog, prompting an immediate and large-scale search operation.
Over the course of three days, authorities deployed:
- Hundreds of law enforcement officers
- Volunteers from multiple agencies
- K-9 search teams
- Drones and aircraft
- Ground search crews covering several square miles
“This is not the outcome anyone hoped for,” Smith said during a news conference. “Our hearts go out to this family and everyone who worked tirelessly to bring this child home.”
Searchers eventually discovered the child’s body in a wooded area. The family dog was found alive nearby, officials confirmed.
Cause of death not yet released
Authorities said no cause of death has been determined at this time, and an official autopsy is pending.
There is currently no evidence indicating foul play in the child’s death, Sheriff Smith emphasized.
Investigators have not provided a timeline for when autopsy results may be released.
Child was visiting from Florida under custody arrangement
Officials confirmed that Johnathan and his siblings live with their mother in Florida and were visiting their father in Alabama for the holidays under a custody agreement.
The boy was last seen wearing:
- A yellow Mickey Mouse shirt
- Black pants
- Paw Patrol shoes
His disappearance triggered concern almost immediately due to the remote location, dense woods, and cold winter conditions.
Father arrested during search, charges unrelated
During the same news conference, investigators announced the arrest of the boy’s father, Jameson Kyle Boley, 40, which occurred amid the ongoing search.
According to authorities, Boley was charged with unlawful manufacture of a destructive device, a felony under Alabama law.
Court records from Walker County District Court allege that investigators discovered precursor materials at the Highway 195 property, leading to the charge.
“These charges are unrelated to the disappearance and death of Johnathan,” Smith said. “They should not be conflated with the search for this child.”
Officials stressed again that no connection has been established between the criminal charge and the child’s death.

Community mourns in Florida
As news spread, grief rippled through Parrish, Florida, where community members gathered for a candlelight vigil to honor the young boy’s life.
Family members have not spoken publicly, and authorities have asked the public to respect the family’s privacy as they mourn.
“This is an unimaginable loss,” Smith said. “We ask everyone to give this family the space and compassion they deserve.”
Investigation remains ongoing
While the search effort has concluded, investigators say the case is not yet closed, pending autopsy findings and further review.
Officials said additional information will be released when available, and urged the public to avoid speculation.
For now, a community across two states is left grieving the loss of a young life, remembered by loved ones as a joyful child whose disappearance mobilized an extraordinary effort to bring him home.
