Fremont, California — A 93-year-old man is in custody after allegedly fatally shooting his 86-year-old spouse in a parking lot early Saturday morning, then calling police to surrender, according to authorities.
The Fremont Police Department said officers were dispatched around 12:22 a.m. on January 3 to a parking lot in the 5000 block of Mowry Avenue after receiving a call from a man who reported that he had shot his spouse and wanted to turn himself in.
Officers find victim inside vehicle
When police arrived, they detained the caller, later identified as Richard Hocking, who was standing near his vehicle. Inside the car, officers found the victim seated in the front passenger seat with a visible injury.
Despite emergency response, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not publicly released the victim’s name.
A firearm was recovered from inside the vehicle, authorities confirmed.

After being taken into custody, Hocking was transported to the Fremont Police Department, where he provided a statement to detectives.
Police said Hocking explained his reasoning for the alleged shooting, but investigators have not made those details public.
Hocking was booked on suspicion of homicide with a gun-related enhancement, officials said.
The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office will now review the evidence and determine whether formal charges will be filed.
