Houston, Texas – A woman was shot and killed during a late-night shooting at a northwest Houston apartment complex, while three young children inside the residence were left physically unharmed, according to police and local reports.
The fatal incident unfolded around 8 p.m. Friday at an apartment located in the 6200 block of West Tidwell Road, sending shockwaves through the surrounding neighborhood. Authorities say the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under active investigation.
The victim was identified as Shyta Campbell, according to ABC13 Houston.
What investigators say happened
Officers with the Houston Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at the apartment complex and found Campbell suffering from gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition but later died from her injuries.
Police said an argument occurred prior to the shooting, though investigators have not clarified who was involved or what sparked the confrontation.
“The individuals involved in the argument moved toward the front door, where the shooting occurred,” police said during a briefing.
Neighbors told investigators they heard dozens of gunshots, with some estimating as many as 30 rounds fired during the incident.
Children inside apartment were not injured
At the time of the shooting, three children — two 6-year-olds and one 8-year-old — were inside the apartment, according to local officials. Despite the chaos and gunfire, none of the children were physically injured.
Authorities later confirmed that Campbell was not the children’s mother and did not live at the apartment. The exact relationship between Campbell, the apartment, and those inside has not been publicly detailed.
Police emphasized that protecting the children and ensuring their safety became an immediate priority once officers secured the scene.
Detentions made, but no suspect named
In the hours following the shooting, police detained multiple individuals as part of the investigation.
- A woman was detained shortly after the shooting, then later released without charges
- A man was detained around 2 a.m. Saturday, though his status has not been clarified

As of the latest update, no arrests have been announced, and police have not publicly identified a suspect.
“This remains an active investigation,” officers said, adding that detectives are still working to determine who fired the shots and why.
Family remembers victim’s final conversation
Campbell’s sister, Kanneshia Penrice, spoke with ABC13 about the devastating loss, saying she had spoken with her sister just one week before the shooting.
“Never knew it was going to be the last time I would just talk to my sister,” Penrice said.
“She was like, ‘I’m ready to do what I have to do. I’m ready to move, get on moving with my life and everything.’”
Penrice described her sister as someone who was trying to move forward and make changes, making the sudden violence even harder to process.
Despite the circumstances, Penrice said she is choosing forgiveness.
“I don’t hold no will toward him or anybody else,” she said. “I’m going to leave it in God’s hands and let Him handle it.”
Community shaken by gun violence
The shooting has left neighbors shaken, particularly due to the presence of children during the gunfire. Residents described hearing rapid bursts of shots and seeing police flood the complex shortly afterward.
While investigators have not confirmed whether the shooting was targeted or random, officials reiterated that anyone with information is urged to come forward to help bring clarity and accountability.
Police are continuing to review evidence, speak with witnesses, and piece together the events that led to Campbell’s death.
Investigation continues
Authorities have not released information on potential charges, motives, or whether the shooting involved known individuals. Detectives say updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
Anyone with information related to the shooting is encouraged to contact Houston police or submit tips anonymously.
