Irvine, California — A brazen early-morning burglary targeting a luxury handbag store in Irvine ended with two suspects in custody after heavily armed police swarmed the scene, recovering nearly $100,000 worth of designer merchandise, authorities said.
The Irvine Police Department confirmed Tuesday that officers arrested two men after surveillance footage captured them breaking into a high-end retail store carrying luxury brands such as Celine and Givenchy.
Burglary caught on surveillance cameras
According to police, the incident unfolded in the area of Jamboree Road and Dupont Drive, where building security alerted authorities to suspicious activity in the early morning hours.
Surveillance video released by police shows two suspects — both dressed in black hoodies and face coverings — scaling a tall wall to gain access to the building. Once inside, they allegedly entered the luxury handbag store and began grabbing merchandise.
The footage shows the suspects attempting to exit through an emergency door while carrying armfuls of handbags. When they realized police were nearby, the men changed direction and ran up a stairwell to a higher floor in an effort to evade officers.
Heavy police response and arrests
Irvine police officers, assisted by Costa Mesa Police Department units and K-9 teams, quickly surrounded the area. Drone support was also deployed to help track the suspects’ movements inside the building.
Video shows officers — some carrying rifles — locating the suspects hiding near office spaces on an upper floor. The men were then taken into custody after a brief struggle, police said.
Body camera footage captured the suspects being handcuffed and escorted to a police cruiser. Authorities confirmed that both men resisted arrest before being detained.

Police identified the suspects as:
- Richard Bernard Spencer, 40, of Los Angeles
- Marcellus Ronell Shelby, 30, of Hollywood
Both were booked into Orange County Jail on multiple charges, including:

Investigation ongoing
Authorities did not say whether the suspects may be connected to other retail theft cases across Southern California. Organized retail theft has become a growing concern statewide, prompting increased law enforcement coordination and tougher penalties.
The Irvine Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges could be possible.
