Sheldon, Texas — A domestic dispute inside a Texas apartment complex escalated into a destructive fire that left multiple families displaced after a woman allegedly set her boyfriend’s clothes on fire using a barbecue pit, according to investigators.
The incident unfolded earlier this week at an apartment building in Sheldon, where fire crews were called to reports of a rapidly spreading blaze. Officials with the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office later confirmed that the fire began on a second-floor balcony and caused extensive damage throughout the building.
What investigators say happened
According to authorities, the fire started after a domestic disturbance between a woman and her boyfriend. Investigators believe the woman placed several items of her boyfriend’s clothing into a barbecue pit located on the apartment balcony and set them on fire.
Fire officials say the woman initially attempted to extinguish the flames. However, the fire rekindled after she believed it had gone out.
“The fire later reignited and spread to the structure,” the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office said in a statement.
Once the flames spread beyond the balcony, they quickly moved through the building, forcing residents to evacuate as firefighters rushed to contain the blaze.
Extent of the damage
Fire crews confirmed that 13 apartment units were heavily and irreparably damaged by the fire, smoke, and water used during firefighting efforts. Officials said the destruction was severe enough that many of the units are now considered uninhabitable.
In addition to fire damage, the building also suffered structural failure.
Fire officials said the second floor collapsed onto the first, significantly increasing the danger and complicating firefighting operations.
Residents described chaotic scenes as parts of the building gave way.
“The roof had caved in, and stuff was falling off the back,” said witness Mario Thompson.
Injuries and emergency response
During the response, one firefighter was transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities said the firefighter is currently in stable condition. The woman involved in the incident was also taken to a hospital for undisclosed reasons.
No fatalities were reported, but the emotional toll on residents has been significant as many were forced from their homes with little notice.
Charges filed
Following the investigation, the woman was charged with reckless arson, officials confirmed. Fire marshals determined that her actions directly led to the blaze that caused extensive damage across the apartment complex.

Authorities emphasized that even small, seemingly controlled fires can quickly turn catastrophic — especially when started on balconies or near residential structures.
A reminder about fire safety
Fire officials reiterated that open flames and grills are extremely dangerous when used on apartment balconies, particularly during emotional or volatile situations.
They urge residents to follow local fire codes and never use barbecue pits or open flames in prohibited areas, noting that even brief fires can reignite and spread rapidly.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details may be released as the case proceeds through the legal system.
