Beauregard, Alabama — A disturbing animal cruelty investigation is unfolding in rural Lee County after authorities say 29 dogs were found dead and stacked inside plastic bags in a backyard, while two dozen more dogs were discovered alive but severely emaciated inside the home.
Three people living at the property have been arrested as investigators work toward what officials say are likely felony animal cruelty charges.
The case has shocked neighbors and animal welfare advocates, with officials calling the conditions inside and outside the home deeply troubling.
Neighbor’s Call Leads to Grim Discovery
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a home in the 8100 block of Lee Road 146 in the Beauregard area around 10:45 a.m. Monday, after a neighbor reported concerns about dogs on the property.
When deputies arrived, they uncovered a horrifying scene.
Authorities said 29 dogs were found deceased, their bodies placed inside plastic bags and piled together in the backyard. Inside the home, investigators located 24 additional dogs, many of which were extremely underweight and suffering from neglect.
Dogs Ranged From Puppies to Adults
Officials said the dogs found on the property ranged from young puppies to fully grown adults, indicating the situation had likely been ongoing for an extended period.
While investigators have not yet released details about how long the dogs were kept in those conditions, authorities say the number of animals involved points to prolonged neglect and severe mistreatment.
“The investigation will more than likely result in felony charges for all three individuals,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Three Residents Arrested
Law enforcement identified the three people living at the home as:
- Curtis Dewayne Haralson, 63
- Patricia Ann Sims, 64
- Tiffany Ann Sims, 27
All three were arrested Monday and booked into the Lee County Jail, according to authorities.
At this time, officials say formal charges have not yet been filed, but the investigation remains active and ongoing. Deputies indicated that charges are expected as evidence continues to be reviewed.
Surviving Dogs Taken Into Protective Custody
The surviving dogs were removed from the property by Lee County Animal Control, officials confirmed. The animals are now in protective custody, where they are receiving medical evaluations, food, water, and care.
Authorities have not yet released details on the dogs’ current conditions or whether they will be made available for adoption in the future.
Animal welfare officials say cases involving large-scale neglect often require extensive veterinary assessments before decisions can be made about long-term placement.
Community Reacts With Shock and Anger
Neighbors in the Beauregard community expressed disbelief that such conditions could exist so close to home.
Animal advocates say the case highlights the importance of reporting suspicious conditions early, especially when large numbers of animals are involved.
“If something doesn’t seem right, saying something can save lives,” one local advocate said.
Officials credited the reporting neighbor with initiating the investigation that ultimately led to the dogs being rescued.
Felony Charges Likely Under Alabama Law
Under Alabama law, aggravated animal cruelty can rise to the felony level when neglect results in serious injury or death. Investigators say the scale of the incident and the number of animals involved will be central to determining final charges.

Authorities have not said whether additional suspects could be identified or whether more animals may be linked to the case.

Officials emphasized that while arrests have been made, the case remains under active investigation and further updates are expected.
“This is a developing investigation,” deputies said. “More information will be released as it becomes available.”
