Florida Beauty Student Killed in Parking Lot Murder-Suicide Outside Davie School, Police Say

Davie, Florida — A 20-year-old beauty school student was shot and killed in a targeted attack outside her campus Tuesday afternoon, authorities said, after an ex-boyfriend allegedly stalked her and then took his own life in a murder-suicide that unfolded in a school parking lot.

Police identified the victim as Aileen Martinez, a cosmetology student at the Aveda Institute of South Florida. Officers responded just after 2 p.m. to reports of gunfire at the campus on University Drive, where they found Martinez inside a white SUV suffering from gunshot wounds.

Targeted shooting in broad daylight

Investigators said Martinez was seated inside her vehicle when a 25-year-old man, described as her former boyfriend, approached and opened fire. After shooting Martinez, the suspect turned the gun on himself, authorities said.

The man was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries. Police have not released his name and said the investigation remains ongoing.

Lockdowns ordered at nearby schools

The shooting prompted immediate safety measures across the area. Two nearby campuses — St. David Catholic School and Know It All Preparatory School — were placed on lockdown as a precaution while officers secured the scene.

A 911 call obtained by NBC 6 South Florida captured the panic moments after the gunfire, with callers reporting a man pointing a gun at a vehicle and a victim slumped inside.

Family says ex-boyfriend had been stalking her

Martinez’s parents later confirmed her identity and said the shooting followed alleged stalking behavior by the ex-boyfriend. In a statement, they described the killing as a “sudden act of violence.”

“We condemn the violence and stalking that led to this unimaginable loss,” the family said. “No parent should have to bury their child, and no one should ever live in fear for choosing to walk away from a relationship.”

Authorities have not disclosed specific details about prior reports or restraining orders, if any, and said they are still examining the circumstances that led to the attack.

Remembering Aileen Martinez

Martinez was pursuing cosmetology and had previously studied music in Miami, performing with local bands, according to a GoFundMe created to support her family with funeral expenses.

Friends and organizers described her as creative, warm, and full of life, with interests ranging from rock music and thrift shopping to video games and makeup artistry.

“She was the shining light in her family’s life,” the fundraiser organizer wrote, noting that her favorite color — jade green — symbolized peace, love, and harmony.
