North Hollywood, California — A Southern California firefighter has been detained after authorities discovered a woman dead inside a North Hollywood residence, prompting a homicide investigation now being led by Los Angeles police.
The incident unfolded early Wednesday morning and has drawn attention due to the suspect’s role as a longtime firefighter and paramedic with a neighboring city’s fire department. Officials say the case appears to be isolated, with no ongoing threat to the public.
Welfare check leads to grim discovery
Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a welfare check around 4 a.m. on January 21 at a home in the 5600 block of Satsuma Avenue.
Upon entering the residence, officers located a woman deceased inside the home. Authorities later confirmed that her death was being investigated as a homicide.
The woman, believed to be in her 50s, has not yet been publicly identified as investigators work to notify next of kin.
“The individual found inside the residence was a victim of a homicide,” LAPD Officer Tony Im confirmed.
Suspect flagged down police earlier
Police say the welfare check was initiated after the suspect flagged down a patrol unit several miles away from the residence earlier that morning.
According to law enforcement sources cited by local media, the man told officers he had been unable to reach his wife and expressed concern about her wellbeing. He also reportedly mentioned that the couple had been involved in an altercation.
Those statements prompted officers to accompany him back to the residence, where the woman was later found dead.
Investigators have not disclosed the timeline between the reported altercation and the welfare check.
Man taken into custody, not yet booked
Following the discovery, the suspect was detained by LAPD officers. Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains in its early stages.
“This appears to be an isolated incident, and there is no threat to public safety,” Officer Im said.
“The individual has not yet been formally booked.”
Police have not announced formal charges, pending further investigation and review by prosecutors.
Fire department confirms suspect’s identity
Later Wednesday, the City of Glendale confirmed that the detained individual is Andrew Jimenez, a firefighter and paramedic who has served with the Glendale Fire Department since April 28, 2008.
City officials said Jimenez has been placed on administrative leave and removed from active duty while the investigation continues.

A spokesperson for the city said the department is fully cooperating with law enforcement.
City and fire officials respond
In a written statement, Glendale Fire Chief Jeff Brooks expressed condolences to those affected by the incident.
“Our condolences are with the victim’s family and loved ones,” Brooks said. “We are prepared to support those impacted by this tragedy, and we are also ensuring our firefighters and staff have access to support resources as they process this loss.”
City officials added that the Glendale Fire Department has no further comment at this time due to the ongoing investigation.
Investigation details remain limited
Authorities have released few details about the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death. Police confirmed that evidence collected at the scene is being reviewed as part of the homicide investigation.
The Los Angeles Police Department is serving as the lead agency, while the Glendale Fire Department and city officials said they are cooperating fully.
Investigators have not publicly discussed a motive, nor have they clarified the nature of the relationship beyond describing the woman as the suspect’s wife.
Community impact and next steps
The case has unsettled residents in the North Hollywood neighborhood, though police stressed that there is no indication of a broader threat.
As the investigation continues, detectives are expected to conduct forensic analysis, interview witnesses, and consult with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges will be filed.
Officials said more information may be released once the suspect is formally booked or charges are announced.
For now, authorities urge the public to avoid speculation and allow the investigation to proceed.
