Knoxville, Tennessee — A Knoxville woman is facing serious criminal charges after authorities say she failed to properly care for her elderly, diabetic father, allowing his health to deteriorate to a life-threatening level before he was taken to the hospital.
Police in Knox County allege the 74-year-old man suffered extreme medical neglect while under the care of his daughter, resulting in critical injuries and dangerously uncontrolled diabetes.
Elderly man hospitalized in critical condition
According to court records reviewed by local investigators, the man was transported to a hospital on January 2, where medical staff immediately identified signs of severe neglect.
Doctors determined that his blood sugar level had risen above 600, a level that can place a patient at risk of a diabetic emergency if left untreated.
“Medical staff believed the patient’s condition was consistent with prolonged neglect,” investigators stated in court documents.
The man was admitted to a critical care unit for intensive treatment.
Long-term medical needs reportedly ignored
Authorities say the victim became bed-bound after suffering a stroke nearly ten years ago, requiring ongoing medical care and daily assistance.
Investigators allege that over the past six months, his condition worsened significantly as his caregiver failed to address his medical needs, despite his known history of diabetes and other serious health conditions.
Police say the victim had not received appropriate medical attention for an extended period of time.
Serious injuries discovered during hospital exam
While examining the man, medical staff discovered advanced pressure-related injuries, including untreated bed sores, which required immediate intervention.
According to court documents, doctors had to perform multiple surgical procedures to remove damaged tissue and prevent further complications.

“The injuries were extensive and required emergency medical treatment,” investigators noted.
Hospital officials also determined that the man had been behind on his prescribed diabetes medication prior to his admission.
Caregiver accused of withholding medication
Police identified the caregiver as Misty McDaniel, 42, who lived with her father in Knoxville and was responsible for overseeing his daily care.
According to investigators, McDaniel allegedly failed to administer prescribed medication, even though supplies were reportedly available in the home.
During a search of the residence, officers said they located unused diabetes medication, supporting claims that treatment had not been consistently provided.

Her husband was also listed as assisting with caregiving responsibilities, police said.
Arrest and charges filed
McDaniel was taken into custody on January 17 and charged with aggravated neglect of an elderly or vulnerable adult resulting in serious bodily injury, a felony under Tennessee law.
She was booked into jail in Knox County, where her bond was set at $75,000, according to court records.
The investigation remains active as authorities continue reviewing medical findings and caregiving arrangements.
Case highlights risks of elder neglect
Law enforcement officials say the case underscores the serious consequences of failing to provide adequate care for elderly or medically vulnerable individuals.
“Caregivers have a legal and moral responsibility to ensure basic medical needs are met,” police said.
Officials encourage families and community members to report suspected neglect, noting that early intervention can prevent severe injury or death.
What happens next
McDaniel is expected to appear in court as the case moves forward. Prosecutors have not released additional details about potential charges involving other caregivers.
Authorities say updates may be provided as the judicial process continues.
