Birmingham, Alabama — A stretch of below-freezing mornings is settling in across Central Alabama, with repeated cold blasts expected to keep temperatures well below normal through the rest of the week and into the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.
Forecasters say the cold pattern will bring hard freezes, areas of frost, and biting wind chills, even as daytime sunshine offers only brief relief.
Freezing mornings continue across Central Alabama
Temperatures early Tuesday have already dipped into the mid to upper 20s in many locations, with low to mid-20s common in rural and outlying areas. More populated cities, including Birmingham, are seeing lows closer to the upper 20s, but frost remains widespread.
Despite the cold start, Tuesday is shaping up to be one of the most pleasant days of the week from a daytime perspective. Skies will remain mostly sunny, with afternoon highs climbing into the lower to mid-50s. Winds will stay light from the southwest at 5–10 mph, helping temperatures recover modestly.
Another cold front arrives midweek
Changes arrive quickly on Wednesday as another surge of cold air pushes into Alabama. Clouds will increase during the morning, with scattered showers possible, first across northern counties by early morning and then spreading south by midday.
High temperatures Wednesday will peak in the upper 40s to low 50s, before dropping sharply during the evening. By nighttime, temperatures will fall into the 30s, setting the stage for another hard freeze early Thursday morning.
Snow unlikely, but cold will be intense
While some colder systems bring wintry precipitation, forecasters say this one appears much drier as the cold air deepens.
A few early-morning flurries cannot be completely ruled out Thursday if lingering cloud cover holds on, but no meaningful snow accumulation is expected.
The main story will be the cold, with wind chills potentially dropping into the single digits in some areas Thursday morning.
Daytime highs Thursday are expected to struggle, reaching only the mid-30s, with overnight lows dipping back into the mid-20s. Friday morning could be even colder in some locations, especially outside city centers.
Cold weather lingers into the weekend
The chill does not end with the workweek. Forecast guidance shows another reinforcing surge of cold air arriving around the weekend, keeping temperatures locked in a winter pattern.
Saturday looks mostly dry, though a few isolated light showers are possible early. Highs will remain in the 40s, with overnight lows dropping back into the 20s.
By Sunday night and into Monday morning, temperatures could fall into the teens and lower 20s, marking one of the coldest periods of the season so far.

Current projections suggest dry but cold weather for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Morning lows will be frigid, followed by afternoon highs only reaching the 40s, keeping winter firmly in place.
