Union Parish, Louisiana — A bizarre trespassing call in rural Louisiana escalated into a violent confrontation after a woman was found naked in a pond, allegedly intoxicated, and later assaulted a sheriff’s deputy while resisting arrest, authorities said.
The incident occurred in November in the Linville community of Marion and led to multiple felony charges. According to the Union Parish Sheriff’s Office, the woman later claimed she was “trying to be a mermaid.”
Deputies respond to trespassing complaint
Authorities said deputies were dispatched to a residence after a caller reported a neighbor standing in their driveway, screaming and refusing to leave, despite being warned previously.
When a patrol deputy arrived on scene, the situation took an unexpected turn.
“The suspect was found nude and swimming in a pond located on the caller’s property,” the sheriff’s office said.
Suspect identified, refuses to comply
The woman was later identified as 41-year-old Erin Elizabeth Sutton of Marion.
According to authorities, Sutton initially refused to exit the pond or speak with the responding deputy. During the encounter, she allegedly told the deputy she was “trying to be a mermaid,” according to a sheriff’s office social media post.
Despite repeated commands to comply, Sutton remained uncooperative for several minutes.
EMS called due to cold exposure
After Sutton eventually exited the pond, deputies contacted emergency medical services because of cold temperatures and concern for her health.
Officials said a blanket was provided, and the deputy attempted to escort Sutton into a nearby residence so she could warm up safely.
That is when the situation allegedly escalated.
Deputy allegedly assaulted
According to the sheriff’s office, Sutton suddenly charged at the deputy, ignoring repeated commands to stop.
Authorities said she resisted detention, prompting the deputy to deploy a taser, which had no effect.
“The suspect continued to resist, kick, and punch the deputy,” officials said.
Sutton was eventually taken to the ground and restrained with assistance.
Threats made during hospital transport
Sutton was transported to a hospital for further medical evaluation. During the transport, authorities say she threatened to kill deputies and paramedics, escalating the seriousness of the case.
Because she required medical care at the time, deputies did not immediately arrest her.
Arrest warrants issued, suspect later surrenders
Following the incident, deputies sought arrest warrants, which were approved by a judge in Louisiana’s Third Judicial District Court.
Sutton later surrendered to authorities on January 6, 2025, and was formally taken into custody.
Multiple charges filed
According to the Union Parish Sheriff’s Office, Sutton now faces numerous charges, including:
- Three counts of resisting an officer with force or violence
- Two counts of battery of a police officer
- Two counts of public intimidation
- Disturbing the peace / drunkenness
- Criminal trespassing

Her bond was set at $62,000, officials confirmed.
Authorities stress safety during calls
The sheriff’s office emphasized that deputies often encounter unpredictable and dangerous situations, particularly when alcohol or drugs are involved.
Officials did not release further details about Sutton’s condition or whether she has legal representation.
Case moves forward
The case remains active as it moves through the court system. No injuries to deputies were reported beyond the alleged assault.
