Sarasota Neighborhood Walk Turns Deadly After Unleashed Dogs Attack Family Pets

Sarasota, Florida — What began as a routine evening walk in a quiet Sarasota neighborhood ended in tragedy Thursday night when two unleashed dogs attacked a man and his pets, killing one dog, injuring another, and prompting a deputy-involved shooting to stop the attack.

The incident unfolded around 7 p.m. in the Gulf Gate community, near Bispham Road and Lockwood Terrace, an area typically busy with residents walking dogs as the sun sets. For longtime resident Andrew Nibley, the walk was one he had taken countless times before — until it abruptly turned violent.

Sudden Attack On A Familiar Route

Nibley was walking his two dogs, Diana, an English Setter, and Chauncey, a Cairn Terrier, both leashed and under control, when the attack occurred.

“It happened so quickly that I couldn’t do anything,” Nibley said.

According to his account, the group had just reached the end of the street when two large dogs emerged from the shadows without leashes and rushed toward them.

“Out of nowhere, they came at us,” he said. “They attacked my dogs who were on leashes.”

Diana was the first to be struck and suffered the most severe injuries. Nibley said she was dragged across the street, leaving behind what he described as a significant amount of blood.

Attempt To Defend Leads To More Injuries

Witnesses said Diana did not fight back during the attack. Chauncey, however, attempted to intervene, which resulted in him being bitten as well.

Neighbors rushed to help as the situation escalated. Nibley himself suffered bite wounds to his hands and thigh while trying to protect his pets and stop the attack.

Meanwhile, the person handling the aggressive dogs — later identified as the owner’s roommate — also sustained serious injuries.

Deputy Fires Shot To Stop Threat

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy responding to the scene was forced to take immediate action to end the ongoing threat.

“Any time there’s an active attack, we are trained to stop the threat,” said Matt Binkley, community affairs manager for the agency.

According to deputies, one shot was fired, striking one of the attacking dogs in the shoulder. The gunfire successfully stopped the assault.

The injured handler of the dogs had suffered puncture wounds to his back and legs, along with severe bleeding to his hand. Deputies applied a tourniquet before he was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

One Dog Dies, Another Under Review

Diana later died from her injuries, marking a devastating loss for the Nibley family.

Sheriff’s officials said the owner of the aggressive dogs chose to euthanize the dog that was shot. The second dog was taken into custody by Animal Services, which will determine next steps.

“There is a procedure in place,” Binkley said. “Animal Services will set standards the owner must meet for that dog to remain in compliance and not continue this behavior.”

At this time, officials confirmed no criminal charges have been filed against the dog owner.

Community Safety Concerns Raised

The incident has shaken the Gulf Gate neighborhood, particularly residents who walk their pets daily.

“This is the time everyone walks their dogs,” Binkley said. “You’re on the sidewalk, you have your dog leashed, you’re doing everything right — and then you’re attacked. It’s not what anyone expects.”

Neighbors expressed concern over unleashed animals in residential areas and questioned whether additional enforcement or safety measures are needed.

Family Seeks Accountability And Prevention

For Nibley and his wife, the focus now is ensuring that no other family experiences a similar loss.

“We just want to make sure nobody else has to go through this nightmare,” Nibley said. “We’re hoping to talk with authorities and see what can be done to make sure this never happens again.”

The couple are longtime animal advocates, noting that both Diana and Chauncey were rescue dogs. They have also worked on animal welfare projects, including producing a documentary focused on puppy mills.

Investigation Ongoing

The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains open, though no further enforcement action has been announced. Animal Services will continue evaluating the remaining dog and the owner’s responsibilities under county regulations.

Officials remind pet owners that leash laws exist to protect both animals and people, and urge residents to report aggressive behavior before incidents escalate.

As the community processes the tragedy, neighbors say the loss has changed how safe they feel during routine evening walks.
