Southern California Man Arrested After Allegedly Threatening Family With Chainsaw and Knife

Lake Elsinore, California — A Riverside County man was taken into custody after deputies say he threatened family members while armed with a chainsaw and a knife, triggering a tense standoff at a residential home in Lake Elsinore.

Authorities say the situation unfolded late Wednesday morning and required assistance from specialized law enforcement units to safely resolve.

Deputies respond to armed family disturbance

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of Lookout Street just before 11 a.m. on January 7 after receiving reports of an armed disturbance.

Family members told deputies that the suspect, Agustin Enrique Arana, 32, had been threatening them while holding both a knife and a chainsaw.

Suspect ignores commands, barricades inside home

When deputies arrived at the scene, Arana reportedly exited the home still armed with the weapons and ignored repeated commands to surrender, authorities said.

He then returned inside the residence and barricaded himself, prompting deputies to establish a perimeter and begin negotiations.

“The suspect refused to comply and retreated into the home,” officials said, describing the encounter as volatile.

During the standoff, all family members were able to safely exit the residence, and no injuries were reported.

Special enforcement unit assists in arrest

As negotiations continued, deputies requested assistance from the Riverside Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau.

After an unspecified period of time, Arana was taken into custody without further incident, officials confirmed.

Authorities did not disclose what tactics were used to resolve the standoff or how long negotiations lasted.

Charges filed, suspect booked

Arana was arrested on assault with a deadly weapon charges and booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center.
