Holocaust Survivor and Service Dog Killed in Hit-and-Run Maserati Crash in Los Angeles

Sherman Oaks, California — An 80-year-old Holocaust survivor and his service dog were killed late Tuesday night after being struck by a speeding Maserati while crossing a residential street in Los Angeles, according to police. The driver allegedly fled the scene, abandoning the damaged luxury car just blocks away.

The victim, Andriy Korshunov, had survived some of the darkest chapters of the 20th century — including the Holocaust — and later escaped war in Ukraine, only to lose his life in what authorities describe as a fatal hit-and-run. The crash occurred on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, adding to the tragedy for his family.

Police say Korshunov was walking with his dog near the 4400 block of Woodman Avenue around 11:30 p.m. when a Maserati struck them. Both Korshunov and the dog were pronounced dead at the scene.

Driver Allegedly Fled After Brief Stop

Witnesses told investigators the driver appeared to stop briefly after the collision before speeding away. Officers later located the Maserati a few blocks from the crash site with heavy front-end damage and no license plates, but the driver had already disappeared.

As of Thursday, police said the suspect had not yet been identified, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities believe speed may have played a role in the crash.

Family Speaks Out After Tragic Loss

Korshunov’s daughter, Ilana Korshunov, expressed shock and grief in an interview with KTLA, saying her father was given no help after being struck.

“He didn’t help him. He just hit and run,” she said. “He killed two souls.”

She described her father as a man who had endured unimaginable suffering early in life but rebuilt himself with resilience and quiet strength over decades.

“God sees everything,” she added. “He has to answer for what he’s done.”

A Life Marked by Survival and Strength

A GoFundMe campaign launched by the family describes Korshunov as a Holocaust survivor who rebuilt his life after surviving history’s darkest chapter, carrying that strength with him for more than 80 years.

“My father survived unimaginable horrors,” the fundraiser states. “Only to have his life taken so suddenly and senselessly.”

The family says any support, whether financial or by sharing his story, helps honor both his survival and the love he gave throughout his life.

Investigation Continues

Police are urging anyone with information about the driver or the crash to come forward as detectives continue working to identify the person responsible. No arrests have been announced, and authorities have not released a suspect description.

The case has drawn renewed attention to hit-and-run crashes involving pedestrians, especially seniors and people relying on service animals for mobility and safety.
