Man Shot After Confronting Suspected Car Burglars in Suburban Chicago, Police Warn of Rising Risks

Morton Grove, Illinois — A man was shot and injured early Sunday morning after confronting two people who were allegedly attempting to break into a vehicle in a quiet north suburban neighborhood, prompting renewed warnings from police about the dangers of confronting suspected criminals.

According to authorities, officers were dispatched to the 7300 block of Palma Lane around 2:44 a.m. following reports of gunfire connected to a car break-in. Police from Morton Grove Police Department and neighboring Niles Police Department responded to the scene.

What Police Say Happened

Investigators said two individuals were in the process of breaking into a parked vehicle when the owner noticed the activity and attempted to confront them. The situation escalated rapidly.

Police said the suspects physically assaulted the victim and then shot him in the leg before fleeing the area. The injured man was treated for his wound, and while his condition was not immediately disclosed, officials said the injury was not believed to be life-threatening.

Witnesses reported seeing the suspects leave the scene in a dark-colored sedan. As of midday Sunday, no arrests had been made, and the suspects remained at large.

Ongoing Search for Suspects

Law enforcement agencies shared suspect and vehicle descriptions with surrounding departments in an effort to locate those responsible. Investigators are urging anyone with information about the shooting or the suspects’ whereabouts to contact Morton Grove police at 847-470-5200.

Police emphasized that even brief encounters with suspects committing property crimes can turn violent in seconds.

The investigation remains active, and authorities say additional details will be released as they become available.

Possible Link to Earlier Armed Incident

The shooting has raised concerns about a potential connection to another armed confrontation involving car burglars earlier this month.

Morton Grove Police Chief Michael Weitzel confirmed that detectives are also investigating a January 7 incident on Reba Street, though he said police cannot yet confirm whether the two cases are related.

In that earlier incident, police said two individuals were attempting to break into a car in the 5700 block of Reba Street around 6:02 a.m. When the vehicle’s owner confronted them, the suspects allegedly waved firearms and fired four shots before fleeing.

The suspects in that case reportedly escaped in a gray Genesis sedan bearing a stolen Illinois license plate. No injuries were reported during that incident.

“Both incidents remain under investigation, and police are actively pursuing multiple leads,” Weitzel said in a written statement.

Police Stress Dangers of Confrontation

Chief Weitzel used the latest shooting to underscore a broader safety message for residents.

While Illinois law allows residents to use proportional force to defend their property, Weitzel cautioned that confronting individuals engaged in criminal activity carries serious risks.

“Incidents such as these highlight the very real danger of confronting individuals who are engaged in criminal activity,” he said.

He added that offenders involved in property crimes are often prepared to escalate situations quickly.

“Those committing acts of this nature are often willing to escalate situations to deadly force without hesitation, as we saw in this case.”

Community Safety Concerns Grow

The back-to-back incidents have heightened anxiety among residents, particularly as vehicle break-ins continue to be reported across suburban areas.

Police are encouraging residents to take preventative measures, including securing vehicles, removing valuables, and promptly reporting suspicious activity rather than intervening directly.

Officials stress that calling 911 and allowing law enforcement to respond is often the safest course of action.

Investigation Continues

Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from the area, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing ballistic evidence from both incidents. Authorities say determining whether the same suspects are involved could help clarify whether Morton Grove is dealing with a pattern of armed car break-ins.

Anyone with dashcam footage, home security video, or information related to either incident is urged to come forward.
