Dallas–Fort Worth, Texas — A changeable weather pattern is setting up across North Texas, with scattered rain and thunderstorms expected midweek before a noticeably cooler air mass settles into the region for the weekend and early next week.
According to the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth, showers and isolated thunderstorms are forecast to develop Wednesday night and continue on and off through Friday, ahead of a passing cold front.
Scattered storms arrive Wednesday night
Rain chances will increase across much of North Texas late Wednesday as moisture spreads into the region. While widespread severe weather is not expected, a few stronger storms are possible, mainly west of the Metroplex.
Forecasters say the best chance for stronger activity will be across western North Texas, including areas near Graham and Cisco, as well as locations west of the I-35 corridor.
Some storms could produce small hail and gusty winds, though the overall threat for severe weather remains low.
Rain probabilities Wednesday night range from 20 to 30 percent around the Dallas–Fort Worth area, increasing to 40 to 60 percent farther north, including areas near Sherman and Paris.
Showers linger into Thursday
On Thursday, scattered showers are expected to continue, though the focus of activity may gradually shift east of the DFW Metroplex as the day goes on.
Western areas of North Texas should see decreasing rain coverage, while eastern sections remain under unsettled conditions. Cloudy skies and periods of light rain could persist through the day, keeping temperatures somewhat muted.
Repeated rounds of rain are possible in some locations, which could lead to brief downpours despite the lack of a widespread severe threat.
Cold front brings another round Friday
By Friday, a cold front is expected to move through the region, triggering another round of showers and thunderstorms, mainly across Central and East Texas.
Areas most likely to see rain on Friday include Waco, Killeen, and Palestine, while parts of North Texas may begin drying out behind the front.
Travel impacts are expected to be minor overall, but officials caution that brief heavy rain could lead to slick roads, especially during morning and evening commutes.
Much cooler air settles in for the weekend
Behind the cold front, a significant cool-down is on the way.
Forecasts show:
- High temperatures dropping into the 50s this weekend
- Morning lows falling into the 20s and 30s, especially early next week
This cooler air mass will bring a more winter-like feel to the region after the midweek storm chances.
Residents may need to prepare for colder mornings, particularly those with sensitive plants, pets, or outdoor plumbing.

What to expect moving forward
As the system evolves, forecasters say the exact timing of storms and the cold front may still shift slightly, and additional updates are likely over the coming days.
For now, North Texans can expect:
- Scattered rain and isolated storms Wednesday night through Friday
- Low-end risk for stronger storms west of DFW
- Cooler, drier weather arriving for the weekend
- Cold mornings early next week
Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware, especially during periods of rain and ahead of the late-week temperature drop.
