Long Beach, California — A quiet residential stretch of Long Beach turned into an active crime scene early Sunday after a man was shot and killed while sitting inside a pickup truck, according to police. Authorities say the deadly shooting unfolded within seconds, leaving investigators searching for answers and the public urged to come forward with information.
Officers with the Long Beach Police Department were conducting routine patrols when the violence erupted shortly before 2 a.m., marking yet another overnight homicide in Southern California.
Gunshots Heard, Crashed Truck Discovered
Police say officers were in the area around 1:49 a.m. when they heard multiple gunshots near the 1600 block of Gaviota Avenue, a neighborhood made up primarily of homes and parked vehicles.
As officers canvassed the area, they quickly located a white pickup truck that had crashed into a light pole and an unoccupied parked vehicle. The crash appeared to have happened immediately after the shooting, suggesting the driver was struck while the vehicle was still moving.
When officers approached the pickup, they found the adult male driver suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
“Officers rendered aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived,” police said in a statement.
Despite emergency efforts, the victim was rushed to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead from his injuries.
