Lake City, Florida — A quiet Monday morning in Lake City turned into a major law enforcement response after a woman was shot inside her own apartment shortly after returning home from a shopping trip, prompting a shelter-in-place order and an ongoing search for an armed suspect.
Authorities say the shooting unfolded in a residential area near SW Michigan Street, sending deputies, emergency crews, and SWAT teams rushing to the scene as neighbors were urged to remain indoors.
Deputies respond to shooting call near apartment complex
According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call was received shortly before 10:45 a.m. Monday, reporting a woman lying injured in the yard of an apartment complex after being shot.
Deputies arrived to find the victim outside the residence. Investigators said she was quickly moved from the front of the apartment to a sheriff’s office patrol vehicle and transported away from the immediate scene to meet emergency medical personnel.
“The victim was moved to a patrol vehicle and taken out of the area to meet EMS,” deputies said.
She was then transported to a hospital for treatment.
Victim describes armed intruder inside her home
While en route to the hospital, investigators said the woman was able to briefly explain what led up to the shooting.
According to deputies, the victim told investigators that she had just returned home from a shopping trip when she encountered a tall man dressed in dark clothing standing inside her apartment.
“The victim stated the subject then shot her,” investigators said.
The suspect immediately fled the scene following the shooting, authorities said. No information has been released indicating whether the victim knew the suspect or whether the incident was targeted or random.
Heavy police presence, shelter-in-place issued
Following the shooting, deputies established a wide perimeter around the apartment complex and surrounding streets as additional law enforcement agencies arrived to assist.
The sheriff’s office issued a shelter-in-place alert through its official Facebook page and the county’s emergency management system, urging residents to stay inside their homes while officers searched for the armed suspect.
“Residents were advised to shelter in place while deputies worked to secure the area,” officials said.
SWAT teams clear apartment, suspect gone
A short time later, SWAT teams from Columbia County and Suwannee County entered and cleared the apartment where the shooting occurred.
Investigators confirmed that by the time tactical teams entered the residence, the shooter had already fled the area.
No additional victims were found inside the apartment, and authorities said there was no ongoing threat within the residence at that time.
Victim’s condition, suspect details remain unclear
As of the latest update, officials have not released the victim’s condition, and it remains unclear how serious her injuries are.
Authorities have also not issued a detailed suspect description, beyond stating that the individual was tall and wearing dark clothing at the time of the shooting.
The lack of suspect details has made community assistance especially critical as investigators work to track the suspect’s movements before and after the incident.
Deputies ask public to review cameras, report tips
The sheriff’s office is urging residents in nearby neighborhoods to help with the investigation by reviewing surveillance footage from the morning of the shooting.
Deputies are specifically asking people in the areas of SW Marion Street, SW Ponce De Leon Avenue, SW Michigan Street, and SW Maryland Lane to check doorbell cameras, home security systems, and dash cameras for anything suspicious.
“If you observed anyone running through yards or along roadways Monday morning, we want to hear from you,” officials said.

Investigation ongoing
Detectives say the investigation remains active as they work to identify the suspect and determine how the intruder gained access to the apartment.
Authorities have not said whether forced entry was involved or if the suspect had been seen in the area before the shooting.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as law enforcement continues the search.
